Harrison called her back forty minutes later, while she was well into her nearly three-hour drive to Kansas City. Evening was slowly giving way to night, casting an eerie sort of dark orange glow to the highway. It was mesmerizing and, in a strange way, calming. It was exactly what she needed to gear herself up for the confrontation to come.

“What have you got for me?” Mackenzie asked.

“Well, it was harder than I thought. And, well…maybe a little awkward. Her last reported place of employment was a small shipping plant for a retail chain. But there are no records of her working there for more than sixteen months. However, I dug a bit more and saw that she was listed as a witness to a lethal bar brawl at a strip club. In the report, she’s listed as being an employee there.”

Yes…sounds about right, Mackenzie thought. “Dare I ask what this place is called?”

“Pinky’s Dream.”

“My God,” she sighed. “Thanks, Harrison.”

She then typed in the poorly chosen name of Pinky’s Dream into her GPS and set her phone down again. She headed east, aware that the last two days had been nothing more than traveling, constant motion moving toward…where? She wasn’t even sure. She was starting to feel like she was running in circles, somehow always coming back to this one case—to this one point in her life that had been clutching at her from an early age.

But maybe, just maybe, she was coming to the end of it. Something about visiting her mother and currently on the trail of her sister made her feel like she was coming full circle.

The question, though, was how her life might change when that circle came to a close.
